How The Competition Works

The competition has 2 rounds. Everyone who enters (regardless of your school's band placement) has the opportunity to advance.

Advancement to the judging round is simply earned by building your bNoteable profile, not by achieving a minimum performance score.

ROUND 1 - Build Your Profile. Reach Expert Profile Strength or higher to advance. It's easy!

Tip: Your required VRMC performance videos count toward your Profile Strength, even if not polished yet!

ROUND 2 - Performance Judging. Students who advance will have their three Region etude excerpts (4 for percussion) evaluated by the judging panel.

1. Competition Rules * The 2026 Virtual Region Music Competition is open to high school students in grades 9–12 who perform on an eligible Woodwind, Brass, or Percussion instrument. Students must be at least 13 years old at signup. * The signup deadline is November 17. All performance videos must be uploaded by December 1 at 11:59 PM. Late submissions will not be accepted. * Students must have an active bNoteable student account and keep their profile complete and accurate throughout the competition. * To advance to judging, students must have a profile photo and earn either an All Star or Legend badge by the performance upload deadline. * For winds, students must perform the designated VRMC excerpt from all three Region etudes for their instrument. Percussion must perform the required four etudes. * First, Second, and Third Place will be awarded in each division: Woodwinds, Brass, and Percussion. Prize amounts are based on total VRMC participation as shown in the prize chart above. * Judges' decisions are final. * Before prizes are awarded, winners' profiles must be verified by their current band director using a school or district email address. * Winners grant bNoteable permission to use their name, image, and competition results for promotional and official competition purposes. .
2. Video Recording Rules * All recordings must be made specifically for the 2026 VRMC. * Record a separate video for each of the three required Region etude excerpts. * Upload your performance videos to your bNoteable profile in the same order the selections are listed in the Required VRMC Etude Excerpts section above. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PERCUSSION: There are only 3 video upload slots on your profile. You may combine two performances into one video, as long as the performances remain in the same order listed above. If you are unable to combine two performances into one video, you may upload your fourth performance (the timpani etude) to the first YouTube slot on your profile. * Begin each video by stating your name, the etude name, and that the performance is for the 2026 bNoteable VRMC. Example: “My name is First/Last Name, and I’m performing [Etude Name] for the 2026 bNoteable VRMC.” Hint: If needed, have the script on your music stand. * Perform the designated excerpt in one continuous take. Editing, cutting, splicing, audio enhancements, filters, or effects are not permitted. * Your face and hand position must be clearly visible throughout the performance. * Each uploaded file must be named using the etude name. Example: Etude-3.mov * Video files may not exceed 2GB. Record in 720p or 1080p. If needed, students may upload a video to YouTube and provide the link on their bNoteable profile. .
3. Recording Tips * Choose a quiet location with minimal background noise. * Keep the background simple and free of visual clutter. * Dress appropriately. Formal attire is not required. * Watch and listen to each recording before uploading it. Videos may be re-uploaded as many times as you'd like before the submission deadline. .
